Chthonian: Cordynceps

Immature Cordynceps
Elder Cordynceps

Name: Cordynceps

Alternate Name: Phongi

Description: Cordynceps are small mushroom-like Chthonians. They appear in a variety of shapes and forms but usually appear as humanoid mushrooms. Another form of this Chthonian appears as a small seahorse.

Behavior: Cordynceps are hostile towards any form of technology. They have a habit of destroying any technology that is not infected by them. After breaking a device, Cordynceps will infect the broken device and use it as a home or shell. The object resumes working, but it will sprout a mushroom cap and sometimes arms and legs. At this point the object will function as normal although possessed by a mushroom and gaining autonomy. Favorite objects for this Chthonian include objects capable of long-distance communication like cell phones and objects capable of advanced mobility like toy cars and helicopters. Should a Cordyncep not find a device to infect, they grow into their “elder” form. This form appears as a seahorse covered in mushrooms. Elders lose the hostility to technology that is common among their younger counterparts but are just as friendly, but they are considered off-putting due to their unpleasant appearance.

Threat: Corynceps are not inherently hostile towards humans however one should be cautious if a Cordynceps gets into any form of technology that may be harmful such as power tools, guns, or vehicles as they enjoy using whatever technology they infect. If a traveler gives Cordynceps some technology they use often they will find themselves with an excellent companion. The elder form Cordynceps pose very little threat to humans and should one be befriended it will float around its companion traveler.
